Interests: I love Dragon Age and Star Wars so I thought a cool mishmash of the two would be EXCEPTIONALLY fun. I love political intrigue and action/battle sequences, and Anakin jumping laser sword first into Bad Decisions ™. Part of the draw was reimagining how he would fit into the world itself, and I think it’s just going to be really fun to play in the setting.. I love all things medieval + fantasy and I love all the Dragon Age games so! Yeah. Also getting this kid some friends. He needs ‘em.

History

Canon History: A long time ago in a galaxy far away....

AU History:

• Anakin grew up in the outskirts of Angsburg, an indebted servant to a junkshop owner named Watto.

• He discovered his magical abilities at a young age, but promised his mother Shmi Skywalker that he would not speak of them.

• By chance a templar whose wagon was attacked by bandits came to their backwater town to get it fixed; he discovered Anakin’s abilities and was obligated to take him to the Circle.

• In the Circle Anakin excelled - he was taught to read and write, and took to most mage studies eagerly. By 17 he had gone through his Harrowing, and at 20 was asked to join the of the Knight Enchanters as an apprentice.

• At around this time he also got recurrent nightmares of his mother dying, and demons offering him the power to save her.

• Anakin seized upon the opportunity when he was allowed out from the Circle (with a minimal templar escort) to gather ingredients for the hilt of his knight enchanter blade. He escaped his guard and fled to his home, but found his mother had been freed from service and lived on the edge of town. He arrived, but too late; she had been taken by bandits and all that remained was a blood scrap of the fabric of her dress.

• Anakin used the blood on the dress and some of his own to use blood magic, and summon a demon to help find her - he set out into the night and found the bandits camp and snuck into the tent where his mother was held but he was too late, and she died in his arms.

• Anakin turned his fury on the camp, summoning the beginnings of his spirit blade and using force magic to throw bandits about - but he was still a young mage, and only one against an entire camp. During the fighting the hand he used to wield the blade was severed at the elbow, and he only survived due to the templars who were escorting him finally managed to track him down.

• Anakin was put in solitary confinement for 5 weeks for his escape, and expelled from his knight enchanter training. He began working on making a prosthetic hand for himself. Rumors began to spread that he had used blood magic, and other mages in the Circle gave him a wide berth.

• An Enchanter named Ducius began singling Anakin out and gaining his trust, talking with him about the corruption of the Templars and the dissent between the Enchanter’s about what had happened in the neighbouring Circle in Kirkwall. He convinced Anakin he required ingredients locked away in the Knight Enchanter store rooms. Anakin steals the necessary items for Ducius, sure that the Enchanter wishes only to help save mages should the templars try anything.

• Ducius and his followers use the ingredients and ignite civil war in the Angsburg Circle, summoning demons - Anakin and a few other mages are lucky to escape the Circle with their lives, but are forced to flee.

Personality

Anakin is a passionate person who strives for good; it is both his greatest strength and flaw. He is selfless and protective to his friends over any creed or code, regardless of whether this leads him into danger or breaks specific rules. It’s this dogged loyalty to people that can lead him down darker, more dangerous paths - when people he cares about are endangered he can be ruthless in his methods of retrieving/saving them. This loyalty and inability to leave people behind is born from the intense guilt he bears from the fact he couldn’t save his mother. After this traumatic event, he vowed he would become the strongest mage ever, and resolved to never lose anyone ever again. Anakin can also be reckless and impatient, and a little hot headed when it comes to dealing with injustice. He can have a very polarized view of the world - things are either good or evil, and he most often tries to align himself with the good. He dislikes political maneuverings and stealthy machinations, finding them tedious and time consuming, and this combination can make him easy to manipulate.

Anakin’s the sort to rush ahead relying on gut instinct and spur of the moment plans. He’s adaptable by nature, a quick learner who takes to most tasks with a natural talent which usually helps him carry off his more haphazard schemes. He is definitely a little arrogant and pig headed about his own capabilities which can lead him to eschewing authority, or simply trying to tackle tasks alone. He has a dogged determination and an unrelenting resolve once he’s set his mind to a task, which can be a bit of a nasty combination with his ego. Beside this, he can also be jealous and vengeful - he hates being treated with disdain or exclusion when he perceives himself to be perfectly capable of handling any situation. He doesn’t like being mistrusted! It is this side of him - the unpredictable, angry side with which he makes some pretty poor life decisions! Cough darth vader cough

Anakin can be charming and witty, cheeky with a penchant for bantering til the sun sets. But he can have difficulty expressing and working through his less positive emotions; he learnt to clamp down pretty hard on negative emotions such as anger, jealousy, or hatred thinking that these feelings would make him more susceptible to demons or possession. But because of the prejudice he’s face in his upbringing, his anger at the templar’s and his teachers for not listening to him about what he believed to be the future, and his inability to save his mother, he has a tonne of negative emotions simmering away that he just refuses to deal with. He often beats himself up over the fact that he cannot keep these feelings in check sometimes, adding to his big ol’ cloud of guilt he keeps around to beat himself over the head with. He’s a good guy!! Just a little.. Troubled.


Opinions & Affiliations

Elven Origins - As a half elven child growing up poor in the outskirts of a backwater village, Anakin has faced a lot of antagonism over his origins. Though he’s not ashamed of his elven heritage or mother in any sense, he’s a little cagey about his past. Because of this upbringing he’s can be resentful towards humans on occasion, especially those in positions of power, and especially those who have elven servants, workers, etc. He’s pretty protective of other elves because he’s seen and to some extent lived what happens to them. Their mistreatment is a red flag to him. Slavery is like a red flag to a bull for Anakin.

Templars - Initially due to his recruitment by the kind templar Quintus Gon Jinn, Anakin didn’t hate templars. He resented the lack of freedom but looked on them mostly favourably, having never genuinely attempted to escape the Circle until the incident with his mother. After this incident, and the manipulative machinations of Count Ducius, his opinions on them have shifted; he’s mistrustful of them mostly, suspicious of underhanded motives or injustices they could have commited.

Blood magic - He hates blood magic (even though he used it once in desperation), having seen it used against mage and templar alike and the horrific things it is capable of.


Adaptation

I tried to focus on what events/characteristics I felt were integral to Anakin, and what I could match as closely to his upbringing to make him effectively the same person. Some key aspects of Anakin are his want to do whats right, but also a lot of guilt about what he should have or could have done better. He’s at a pretty vulnerable point having just left the Circle, and not having anyone else to turn to which I think gives him good reason to seek out the Inquisition.

I decided to make him a half city elf because while not technically enslaved, elves definitely face a huge amount of prejudice and difficulty in climbing to any station. I tossed between making him a templar or a mage - I felt like either order provided the same base as the Jedi Order might, but I think the idea of blood mages representing a way of ‘falling to the darkside’ worked better for him. It also meshed better with the way the jedi council exclude him, and the anger and resentment Anakin feels towards them, based on the idea of ‘rumors of blood magic’. I also thought being a Knight Enchanter (or, half of one kind of) was a neat way to include an almost lightsaber. While I did include a Qui-gon Jinn equivalent briefly and a Count Dooku kind of, I tried to keep including other canon characters in his back story to a minimum, in case anyone wanted to app them as well, so this explains Anakin’s biggest difference - this Anakin doesn’t have strong bonds with anyone beyond his now deceased mother. I think he still has most of his integral characteristics; he’s loyal, cheeky, has a strong sense of morality, while still having a slightly darker unpredictable edge to him.

Despite this, he’s a little lost and adrift without an Obi-wan or a Padme and hasn’t completely fallen to despair and anger like in canon. I think finding the Inquisition and joining them is a way for him to affirm the kind of person and the kind of beliefs he wants to uphold. Being part of something bigger, having a duty and a place are things that sit well with Anakin.


Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths;

• Quick thinker and strategizer
• Adaptable! (a nice way of saying he just Makes All Of This Up)
• Strong moral code! Genuinely wants to help!
• Decently powerful mage, pretty adept at force style magic such as shoving opponents backwards, or lifting heavy objects (possibly a person but nothing heavier than a horse?)
• Because of the beginning of his knight enchanter training, he has the hilt of a sword that he can summon a blade for, but doesn’t have any spirit bound to it so lacks any real power other than being.. The illusion of a sword? ( he thinks it looks Kinda Cool so thats something at least?)
• He’s pretty physically adept for a mage, and a lift time in an Alienage as a kid has made him good at climbing over fences and ferreting about in places he shouldn’t go in

Weaknesses;

• Hasn’t ever truly completed formal training in any specific magical discipline; he’s strong, but unpolished and often the overwhelming torrents of energy he can channel can be counterproductive and downright dangerous
• Kinda easy to manipulate!
• Not always the best at listening to orders/directives and likely to go off.. On his own… (Anakin, please, stop trying to single handedly save the world)
• Impatient and rushes in without a plan like, OFTEN
• Can get jealous and resentful
• Doesn’t talk to people about his problems until they become Huge and Completely Unsolvable
• Missing his right hand and has a new prosthetic in its place that he’s still trying to get a handle on. It’s fairly recent so it’s still something he’s acclimating to

Motivation

After the dissolution of his Circle, and nowhere else to turn, Anakin simply set to moving as far from the Free Marches as possible. Ferelden seemed as good a place as any, and after struggling a little on his own he heard of stories of the Inquisition - as well as the demons they fought, and the goal of their plight. Eager to help he decided to head over to pledge his staff, if they would have him. Feels a sense of duty and obligation as a person who had power to turn it to a good cause.
